Celebrity Gemstone | Elizabeth Taylor and Harry Burton Diamond

Elizabeth Taylor is known as the famous personality in the world and well known for her diamond jewelry collection. Richard Burton purchased diamonds as her gift to Elizabeth 40th birthday. The diamond was 69.42 carats and cut into a pear shape by Harry Winston. It was cut from a rough stone weighing 240.80 carats (48.160 g) found in the Premier mine in 1966.

Richard Burton also gave her a heart-shaped yellow diamond which was originally a gift from Shah Jahan in 1621 to his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who also inspired the Taj Mahal.

The stone first owner with pear shape was Harry Winston and
later sold to Harriet Annenberg Ames, a American ambassador. Two years later it was sent to Parke-Bernet Galleries in New York to be auctioned explaining her decision and statement , "I found myself positively cringing and keeping my gloves on for fear it would have been seen, I have always been an extremely gregarious person and I did not enjoy that feeling.

The diamond was put up for auction on October 23rd, 1969, on the understanding that it could be named by the buyer .

But in 1978 after her divorced from Richard Burton, she announced selling the diamond up for sale and planning to use the proceeds to build hospital in Botswana. The auctioneer began the bidding by asking if anyone would offer reached to $1,000,000. The winner was Robert Kenmore, the Chairman of the Board of Kenmore Corporation, the owners of Cartier Inc., who paid the record price of $1,050,000 for the gem, which he promptly named the 'Cartier'
